CLOGHERTOWN UNITED F.C. Cloghertown United Football Club was founded in 1993 and entered the Meath and District League (MDL). The following season the team were runners-up in Division 4 of the MDL. This success prompted interest in the Club and by the end of the decade there were 2 senior teams playing in the MDL while 10 under-age teams (9 boys and 1 girls) were participating in the North Dublin School Boys/Girls League (NDSL). In 2015 the Senior A team were only shaded in the Final of the Leinster Junior Shield, while over the years, it is true to say that the various under-age teams have performed very well, winning their respective League and Cup competitions on a regular basis. The Club draws its players not only from the Clonalvy area but from Ardcath, Cushinstown and Curraha in Co. Meath and also from surrounding parishes across the county boundary in Dublin (e.g. Garristown, Rolestown, Oldtown, etc.).
Cloghertown’s grounds in the early days were provided free by a local benefactor. However, in the mid Noughties when team numbers peaked, the Committee decided that the Club needed to procure bigger grounds. A 10acre field was purchased locally in 2007. On the site, 2 full-sized pitches (one sand based) and 2 juvenile pitches were developed. Portacabins with changing rooms, toilets and a coffee shop were also installed. All of this involved the Club in considerable expense but thankfully, due to the generosity of the surrounding community and fund-raising events, the debt has been brought down to a manageable figure. It is hoped to have it cleared off over the next three years. |
